Tip of the Month:

              by James L. Young

A. B. Best carried a news story today (Mon, 08-09-2010) stating that insurance jobs in this country have been declining -- much like the news reported daily for other industries.

Traditionally, it's understood that when other industries employment outlooks sour, a lot of people decide to try insurance sales, to put food on the table and gas in the tank.

Even with the negative news on the economy and job markets, if I was a young man or woman looking for a good job with a professional reputation, and the possibility of making good money without having to attend college first, I'd still consider entering the insurance field.

I'm "Young," in name and (I hope) somewhat in mind and body, but with more than six decades behind me, if I had it to do over I think I'd become established in insurance or related sales.

While I've never made a lot of money working in the insurance industry, it has provided me with a living -- and more recently supplemented my other income -- for more than a decade. (I was in journalism, editing, writing, publishing and public relations for more than 40 years -- and here I am again.)

I encourage young people -- especially right out of high school -- who want to become established financially and professionally, and military veterans -- whatever their age and background -- to look at the insurance industry.

There's still room for those who aren't afraid of hard work, who want to work "smarter," and who aren't afraid of working on commission (which a lot of us do) to make it. It's a choice!

The Winner's Minute:

by Mac Hammond

Do you want to take a quantum leap forward in the way you communicate as a leader? Then start showing a genuine interest in people.

Caring means more than asking the occasional, "How are you doing?"

Of course, caring alone, devoid of the other leadership qualities, does not produce an effective leader.

But leaders who lack a caring attitude will eventually be disliked by so many people that their leadership light will dim.

Few leaders survive on respect alone.

That means effective leaders can and must do two things at once-care about organizational goals and care about people. "Do the people around you sense genuine concern for their well being?"
